Mielen-boven-Aalst is a sub-municipality of Gingelom and was an independent municipality until 1971. After that, it was a borough of Borlo until 1977. Mielen was first mentioned in 1109, as 'Mile'. In 1529 there was mention of 'Mielen Supra Aelst'. Aalst refers to the nearby village of 'Aalst'. Mielen probably belonged to the domain of the Abbey of Sint-Truiden and was later annexed to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. Mielen is located in Droog-Haspengouw at an altitude of about 100 meters.
