The fortified castle of Écaussinnes is a medieval gem. It had a strategic location at a ford on the Sennette, which separated the County of Hainaut and the Duchy of Brabant. It was built in the 12th century on a rocky outcrop of the Lalaing limestone formation (LAL). As we can see in the photo, this limestone has a slate structure, is clay-like, and is rich in fossils.
