Before the First World War, the Halve Maan domain was already an old Belgian fortress.
During the First World War , the Germans built the battery at Eylau, of which little remains.
During World War II it was used by the Germans, first 'WN Dietl'.
Battery Halve Maan was installed by the Germans during World War II, it is the only surviving anti-aircraft gun installation in Belgium, a complex of anti -aircraft guns or FLAK. The preserved crew bunker (R656), a command bunker, a machine gun bunker, several observation posts , a flank bunker and several brick buildings are unique.
It was built on top of an early 17th-century defensive structure dating back to the Siege of Ostend (1601-1604).
