The Fries Museum of Bruges, housed in the Saaihalle in 2008, is the first and so far only museum in the world that shows the entire history from the origin of the potato to the first French fries.
This history started more than 10,000 years ago in Peru. The museum shows how the wild potato became a cultivated plant .
In the second part, the origin of the fries is explained. There are all kinds of machines here for peeling, cutting and frying the potato. They receive an explanation about the origin of the first sauce, walk through a chip shop, and get an overview of the fries in art, the fries in Bruges and the fries in comic strips .
After the visit, you can taste chips and some typical Belgian meat preparations and sauces in the medieval cellar of the building.
In 2020, a Bruges entrepreneur paid 180,000 euros for one of the chip shops on the Markt . The previous owner went bankrupt. In addition, he pays an annual concession of 125,000 euros to the city.
