The provincial court is located on the spot where the Waterhalle , an imposing harbor building, had been erected in 1294. The Waterhalle was demolished in 1787 because it was no longer accessible for the ships.
The neoclassical successor was partly used by the provincial government from 1850 until it burned down in 1878. A competition was then launched for a building to house the province and the post office .
The Court is owned by the federal government. It has been protected as a monument since 2002 and is mainly used for ceremonies and exhibitions.
There are ten statues of princes in the Provincial Council Hall. The walls are painted with portraits of famous people from West Flanders.
