The Plein has a military past. In the mid-17th century, a citadel was built here, complete with barracks. In the midst of these military buildings lay a training ground, which is now known as the Plein. The military structures were demolished, trees were planted, and in 1879, the Plein was transformed into a public park. In 2002, the park was renovated based on a design by the Wirtz office. The tall trees were removed to make way for leafy pathways made of dolomite. The fountains add a refreshing touch to the park. At the center, you'll find a stage surrounded by seating areas. The park is characterized by its monumental plane trees, linden trees, and wild chestnuts.
It’s a hidden gem in the heart of the city—a park that is a delight to visit on spring and summer days. The namesake café in the Expo 58 building is also highly recommended.
