This limestone washhouse dates from 1729 or around 1825 , depending on the source. The building was probably built in the 19th century, is located under the roadway and has a wide slate roof.
The washing area is accessible via two flights of stairs and is bordered by the protruding edge of the central pipe fed by the Eau Blanche.
This is not about the traditional washing areas with different sinks for soaping and rinsing. It appears that this happened in the 'open sewer'.
Washing places became common from the 18th century onwards, when the need arose to wash linen more than twice a year due to higher hygiene and health requirements .
