The Blanc Pain lock is a safety weir . It is located five kilometres east of the ship lift and 2.5 km from the canal bridge . In the event of a leak west of the lock, the lock is closed, which stops the water supply and limits the damage. It was built from 2001 to 2003.
The Blanc Pain guard gate, so named after the nearby district.
The lock is 34.4 metres wide and 6.4 metres high . It weighs 160 tonnes.
