Charleroi station

On the footbridge in front of the station, the bronze statues of the miner and the steelworker, made by Constantin Meunier, still stand. From the bridge, you can see on the left the last smoking steel factory, Thy-Marcinelle. On the right, you can see the Terril du Boubier rising on the horizon, the highest coal mountain in Wallonia. But the new Charleroi has arrived. The cluttered station square filled with transportation company TEC's stalls has been cleared and transformed into a light gray concrete carpet that rolls out towards the center. The quays along the Samber have been lowered to create green walking and cycling boulevards (designed by, among others, l’Escaut Architectures). This way, the canal is no longer a moat that divides the city, but an invitation to relax.
