Chapel of the Seven Sorrows: Age-old stop for reflection
At the intersection of Kapellekensbaan - Dendermondsesteenweg, we arrive at one of the seven historical processional chapels dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
According to tradition, it has existed since the 16th century. The current chapel, dedicated to "The Deposition of the Cross," bears the year 1776 and was restored in 1806, 1958, and 1989.
The single-nave chapel is built of orange-red brick with a slate gable roof and is flanked by granite bollards. The pointed-arch door, framed with decorative brick, bears the inscription:
"Our Lady of Perpetual Help – Do not set foot here, or say a Hail Mary."
Inside: a blue vault with gilded stars, wooden wainscoting, and a modern Pietà by Staf Peleman replacing the stolen 17th-century statue.
