Description by the author

You are driving from Borkel and Schaft (Camping 't Zwaluwnest) quite quickly to Belgium, briefly crossing Achel and then traveling through wooded areas to the Kanaal Bocholt-Herentals. You follow this canal and switch to the dike path along the Zuid-Willemsvaart. You continue along this canal to Bree, crossing to the opposite bank at Beek. Near Bree, you cycle on side roads to Opitter and traverse wooded areas to Waterloos. Then you climb a hill and ride along the nature reserve Bergerven. Caution: A small section of the bike path along the Bergerven has some spots where the asphalt has been significantly uplifted by tree roots!

Now you again follow the Zuid-Willemsvaart (Caution: short curve and steep descent to get onto the dike path along the canal!). At Dilsen, you switch banks again. Finally, you leave the canal and ride to the Terhills Resort. There, you ride on the pontoon bike path over the Grote Plas ("Cycling over water"), which is referred to as the bike project "Cycling between Terrils" (a terril is a spoil heap). This bike path was opened on the weekend of September 15, 2024.

After you have cycled this x-th realized bike project in Belgian Limburg, you ride over separated bike paths through the forests over Nieuw-Homo and the Mechelse Heide to As, with an ascent that reaches up to 17%. A nice pause spot is the restaurant in the former station building of As. After that, you pass through the Bosbeek Valley and arrive in Opglabeek. You have to briefly go through the center to quickly ride over separated bike paths through forests and along some ponds.

South of Meeuwen, you travel over quiet roads to Erpekom. After Erpekom, you head towards Peer, and unfortunately, it's then inevitable to follow the bike path along a thoroughfare several times (3x) (but not longer than a kilometer each time). North of Peer, you briefly ride along the thoroughfare near the Wedelse water castle on the Dommel to finally follow the bike path over a former tram line (until Achel). In 2024, some intersections of this bike path were adjusted so that cyclists have priority over the traffic on the road crossing the bike path. Subsequently, you ride through the wooded area of the Achelse Heide to return the last three kilometers on the same route you took to Borkel and Schaft.
