You cycle here through one of the most remarkable parts of Picard Wallonia, where industrial heritage and nature come together. The 103-kilometer route winds through car-free roads and bike-friendly paths, with a significant climb of nearly 1100 meters. You don't start at the first attraction, but that doesn't matter—the real surprise comes later.

The Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift is on your route after about 15 kilometers. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a technical marvel from the 1960s, once nearly demolished but now a protected monument. The lift raises boats 73 meters high, an impressive sight.

After a long ride through the landscape, you arrive at Le Grand-Hornu, one of the oldest mining sites in Wallonia. This complex from 1810-1830 combines mine buildings, workers' housing, and management offices around an oval square. In 2012, it was added to the UNESCO list, a tribute to 200 years of progress.

One last stop: Van Gogh's house in Cuesmes. Here Vincent van Gogh lived from 1879-1880 before he became famous. A modest workers' house that makes you pause to reflect on his early years.

The route is tough, but the variety of asphalt, gravel, and quiet roads makes it worthwhile. You cycle through an area where history and nature merge, and where you can truly relax.
