Beschreibung vom Autor

The very favorable location on the Dender and the fertile soil suggest that Denderleeuw was inhabited very early. In the hamlets of Huissegem and Leeuwbrug, tools dating back to the Stone Age were found.

This walk takes you along the banks of the Dender and introduces you to the center and the station area of Denderleeuw.

Some striking points along the route :

1. The Gothic St. Amandus Church, built in white stone and in the shape of a Latin cross, dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. However, due to the countless renovations over the centuries, little can be found of the original form of the church. The last major renovation took place in the Second World War when the church tower was heavily damaged by bombing and had to be replaced. The church has been protected since 1944.

2. The presbytery next to the Sint-Amandus church is a detached double house built in the last quarter of the 18th century. The façade that looks from the street side is actually the rear façade, while the original façade overlooks the garden and the Dender, where a lane used to lead from the rectory to the Moreelstraat. The current front garden is closed by means of a high wall that connects to the cemetery fence of the former cemetery. The original cemetery entrance is marked by bluestone pillars decorated with a skull relief. In addition to the church, the presbytery and the cemetery wall are also protected as monuments.

3. The water tower is a piece of industrial-archaeological heritage that is unique to the region. The tower was built in 1925 to supply the steam trains with water from the ever-increasing train traffic. The water tower is 25 m high with a reservoir capacity of 300 cubic meters. At the base, the tower is 6.5 m wide, while the cockpit itself is 8 m wide. These types of water towers were common in the steam age, but with the electrification of the railway network, many of these towers became obsolete and went flat.
