Hike 90% field roads. The first 2 km muddy in wet weather. Good sturdy high walking shoes are recommended. Definitely not buggies.

With the church behind you, turn right into Walmersumstraat,

Almost immediately you come across the castle of Henderiks on the right. On this place used to be the "court of Bunsbeek". It was already in 1202 owned by the abbey of Heylissem, which had received it from Wouter van Bunsbeek. Vinckenbosch, an industrialist from Tienen, bought the property between 1869 and 1880. He demolished the homestead and built a castle with corner towers more to the west. A park was laid out in English style. The farm buildings were later rebuilt closer to the church.

Theo Henderiks, originally from Weert (The Netherlands), but already living in Belgium before 1914, bought the castle with park, some forest and meadows around 1935, after the death of Albert Vinckenbosch.
Unfortunately, he demolished the castle and built a large villa around 1937 on the same foundations, as it still stands today.
In the park there are several large horse chestnuts and beautiful conifers, including a silver fir (Picea pungens Glauca).

Turn left on the path between houses no. 33 and 35. Soon you will arrive at the watchtower. From here you look out on the ponds of the Paddenpoel and the Velpe valley.
The Paddenpoel is partly located in Bunsbeek (Glabbeek) and partly in Vissenaken (Tienen). The area is situated in the middle course of the Velpe valley. It consists of swamp, hedges and groves, moist grasslands in the valley and drier grasslands on the valley flank. The Velpe still meanders strongly in Paddenpoel and the Rozendaalbeek valley. The river can still run its course freely. It is a paradise for kingfishers, teal and meadow damselflies.

Follow path to the left. You enter the Scholbos. Here you can find thousands of forest anemones, yellow primrose and arum in spring.
When you come out of the forest keep following the road to the left. Also at the next exit to the right, continue on the left.
As soon as you get on the cobblestone you will see the church and the old rectory of Wever on the right. Continue to follow cobblestone road until just past the grove of sleigh and hawthorn. Take the path that goes through the Paddenpoel. If you want to shorten the walk, go straight ahead instead of entering the reserve.

You step over the bridge of the small Velpe, which flows into Bunsbeek together with the Grote Velpe. From here you have a beautiful view of the church of Wever and the old rectory that has been completely restored.
On the T to the Left. Here you are near a picnic table. On the asphalt road, turn right again. Soon you will arrive at the Vissenakensesteenweg where you turn left.
At the first road on the left comes the shortening route. We go a little further towards Tienen and we turn right into the Kattenbos with a signpost to the Hymelinusbron.
At the first house on the left, turn left onto the Hymelinuspad that you follow to the source.

The rural and quiet municipality of Vissenaken (near Tienen), has since time immemorial two parish churches, one dedicated to Saint Peter, the other to Saint Martin.
In the old church of St. Maarten there was a kind of chapel, where in 1946, in a grave, a skeleton was found, which was considered the remains of Saint Hijmelinus. St. Hijmelinus was, according to legend, a priest from Scotland, who died on his return journey to Pisces. He is said to have been of royal blood and a close relative of St. Rombout, who is invoked in Mechelen.
Legend has it that he was resting in Vissenaken for a while when the pastor's maid came to fetch water in the spring. The saint asked her to drink, and the maid invited him to the parsonage. He refused and drank from the jug. When the maid came to the parsonage, the water in the jug had turned into wine.

Go back on your steps and go left over the bridge. Now you come to the Rozendaalbeek valley. Follow the path through the meadow and cross the asphalt road. Turn right and continue through the gate. Soon you will come to a pond where beautiful pink water lilies bloom in the summer.
After a steep climb you arrive at Natuurhuis "de Gors"

This is a cozy visitor center where you can discover the nature reserves of natuurpunt in the area and where activities related to nature are regularly organized.
On the asphalt, turn to the right. In front of you is the church of Sint Maarten.

The first, small St. Martin's Church was built of boulders and bluestone. Around 1100 a (new) Romanesque church was built. Saint Himelinus is said to have been buried there in 631, which made the church a center of popular devotion. For centuries, pilgrims from all over the world came to it. Above the saint's tomb, at the entrance, was an altar erected with a mural above it depicting Saint Heaven. At the altar, behind a closed door, was a large well. Pilgrims took earth from this pit - there was a ladder with as many as seven rungs in it, that's how deep it was - and took it home. They mixed the earth into the food of humans and animals and hoped to cure diseases. The altar with the statue of the saint was destroyed by French and Dutch troops in 1635.
In 1778 the Sint-Maartenskerk was demolished. The relics of Saint Himelinus temporarily moved to the church of Saint Peter in Vissenaken. At the inauguration of the new St. Martin's Church in 1785, the relics were placed back. The new church was built to a design by architect J. Thibaut, in classicist style. The current single-aisled church has a slender built-in tower and a pentagonal choir in baking and sandstone style.

Before you reach the church, turn right into Kaakstraat. In the bend you go straight on the field road. On the next T, turn right.
You follow the first road to the left up the hill. After a while, the water tower of Tienen looms on the left in front of you. It is just on the former border between Tienen and Vissenaken. It is 50 m high, anything but round, painted sugar cube white, modern and visible from afar

You keep following the path until you get to a T. Here you go left and on the next T you turn left again on the road from Vissenaken to Tienen.
Almost immediately there is a field road on the right. You follow it, you end up on the bike path. Here you go straight until just before the grove, where you turn left. When you get to the top of the hill you get a view of the part you have already walked and gradually the church of Bunsbeek comes into view.

At the riding school, on the T, turn right into the Kruisbergstraat which turns into the Moutsbornstraat. You follow it to the concrete road. Here you turn right and you come back to the car.

St. Quirinus Church has a Romanesque tower from the 12th century, a neoclassical portal from the 18th century and a late Gothic choir from the 15th century. Choir and apse are vaulted with pointed arches. The former nave of the then single-aisled church had four bays. It was built, in neoclassical style, in 1776-1777. This nave was demolished, after which two aisles were added in 1950.
