It flows at the bottom of the Lötschental valley to join the Rhône at the village of Steg. It originates at the Langgletscher, at the foot of the Bietschhorn, Hockenhorn, Wilerhorn, and Petersgrat. It measures 22 km from its source to its entrance into the Rhône at an elevation of 626 m.
The main tributaries are: Birchbach, Nästbavh, Tännbach, Tännerbach, Milibach, Gisentella.
