The Commandery of Saint-Jean is a religious building in the Swiss city of Fribourg. It was built in the mid-thirteenth century for the Johannites of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Today it is the seat of the cultural heritage service of the Canton of Fribourg. The complex is completed by the nearby Church of Saint-Jean.
A hospital of the Hospitallers of St. John already existed around 1174 in Magneden. This institution, probably one of the first of its kind in Switzerland, was incorporated into the Fribourg Commandery around 1238. The Hospitallers have been present in Fribourg since 1224-1229, initially in a house on Place du Petit-Saint-Jean en l'Auge, with their first chapel located in the center of today's Place du Petit-Saint-Jean. It was demolished in 1832.
