The gigantic dam wall at the Twistestausee reservoir was built between 1908 and 1914 to provide shipping on the Weser and the Mittelland Canal with sufficient water in summer. In 1943, the British bombed the wall and used bombs to make a breach of up to 70 m wide and 22 m deep. The tidal wave killed 68 people and destroyed numerous homes. Walking on the otherwise completely restored dam wall is allowed.
