Schonnebeck is a district of the city of Essen, Germany. Schonnebeck lies northeast of the city center and borders on Katernberg to the north, Frillendorf and Kray to the west, and the Rotthausen district of the neighboring city of Gelsenkirchen to the east.
The name derives from beautiful stream, beautiful Becke. Schonnebeck was first mentioned in 1242 and from 1808 belonged to the newly founded municipality of Altenessen, which was elevated to an independent mayoralty in 1813. On 1 January 1874, the new mayoralty of Stoppenberg was spun off from this building, to which Schonnebeck fell. This affiliation remained until its incorporation into the city of Essen in 1929.
