Schonnebeck è un quartiere della città di Essen. Schonnebeck si trova a nord-est del centro città e confina a nord con Katernberg, a ovest con Stoppenberg, a sud con Frillendorf e Kray, e a est con il quartiere Rotthausen della città vicina di Gelsenkirchen.
Il nome deriva da "schöner Bach", "bella Beck". Schonnebeck fu menzionata per la prima volta nel 1242 e dal 1808 appartenne alla nuova municipalità di Altenessen, che nel 1813 divenne un comune indipendente. Il 1° gennaio 1874, questa fu divisa nella nuova municipalità di Stoppenberg, a cui andò Schonnebeck. Questa appartenenza rimase fino all'integrazione nella città di Essen nel 1929.
