Bad Liebenstein – until 1907 Liebenstein – is the name-giving and most populous district of the town of Bad Liebenstein in the Wartburgkreis in Thuringia. The district has a tradition as a spa, bath, and tourist town. It became regionally known as the summer residence of the Meiningen ducal family, as Thuringia's oldest spa, and as the largest heart spa in the GDR in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. With 342,000 overnight stays, the town was ranked fifth among Thuringia's tourism destinations according to the Thuringian State Office for Statistics in 2016. In the meantime, the town has slipped to seventh place due to declining overnight stays.
On December 31, 2012, the town of Bad Liebenstein merged with the neighboring municipalities of Schweina and Steinbach to form a new town of Bad Liebenstein with approximately 8,000 inhabitants.
