From here, there is a good view of the Hambach lignite mine. Hambach (located in the German municipalities of Niederzier, Düren, and Elsdorf, Rhein-Erft-Kreis) is the largest lignite mine of RWE. The lignite is extracted through open-pit mining. On the northwest side of the pit lies the spoil heap Sofienhöhe, which can be well seen from the direction of Jülich. The lowest above-ground point in Europe is located in Hambach: 293 meters below sea level. This point is 399 meters below the original surface.
