On May 26, 1828 a neglected 16-year-old boy appeared on the Unschlittplatz. It was a German foundling of unclear origin, who became one of the most formidable enigmas of his century. He wore peasant garb and could barely speak. He understood almost nothing. He was taken to a police station where he wrote down his name: Kaspar Hauser. He had spent his whole life in a shelter and never saw his quard. The only thing he got was bread and water and a small toy.
