The growth development of the Hamburg port due to increasing goods traffic around 1885 also led to a demand for additional storage and handling areas in the hinterland. Due to its favorable ice-protected and flood-free location, the Neustädter Kämmereiwerder in Magdeburg was considered as a harbor site. The then royal government in Berlin already permitted the Magdeburg magistrate to start construction of the port in 1878.
The construction work began in 1888, initially with the erection of the two storage buildings with brick facades that still stand today. The 994-meter long and between 45 and 65 meters wide harbor basin of the trading port was completed in 1893. The quay structure mainly consists of heavy-weight walls; on the northern part, there is a sloped bank paved with natural stones. At the end of the 19th century, the storage blocks GHI emerged to the west of the harbor basin.
