The Lonetal lies between Stuttgart and Munich in the Alb-Donau-Kreis and the Heidenheim district, Baden-Württemberg. The stream Lone, which gives the valley its name, springs from Urspring and flows into the Hürbe at Hürben after 30 kilometers, which feeds into the Brenz. Since the Lone rarely carries water over long stretches, the Lonetal is one of the longest dry valleys in Germany. In 2006, it was recognized as one of the 77 most significant national geotopes in Germany.
The sloped areas are usually free of shrubs and are characterized by a reed bed of common reed grass. The usually wide floodplain is used as intensive grassland. The valley slopes are almost everywhere forested.
