The Braunschweig Collegium has been an institution for adult education since 1949, serving the state of Lower Saxony, aimed at obtaining the general higher education entrance qualification or the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, which the students can achieve in two to three and a half years, depending on their prerequisites.
It was founded in 1949 in Braunschweig with 4 full-time teachers and 50 students and is the oldest school of its kind in Germany. In 1959, the collegium took over the premises of the Academy for Youth Leadership of the Hitler Youth, which had been established between 1937 and 1939. In 1981, the curriculum was aligned with the gymnasial course system. Until 2001, it shared the buildings with the German Millers' School, and since then with the Evening Gymnasium Braunschweig.
