The Clever Gate Prison in Hanover was a prison built "probably at the end of the 17th century" in Calenberger Neustadt, which stood on the banks of the Leine River in front of the Goethe Bridge until 1859.
The building, which was likely constructed during the time of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg for so-called "painful criminals," was located at the end of Langen Straße on the bank of the Leine. It stood directly in front of the former Cavalier Bridge, where today’s Goethe Bridge runs. The associated "interrogation room" was located "above the vault of the Clever Gate."
