The Bänischsee is located in the north of the area of the city of Rheda-Wiedenbrück in the district of Gütersloh. It is located on the edge of the more than 1,000-hectare Rheda Forest, directly on the B64.
Lake Bänisch is mainly used for fishing. The lake is looked after by the Sportfischereiverein Rheda-Gütersloh e.V., which also takes care of the renaturation of the area. Since 2012, the association's young fishermen have been planting pond and water lilies, erecting planted floating islands and distributing deadwood in grids on the bottom of the lake to provide new retreat for fish. In 2013, she received the Environmental Protection Award of the City of Rheda-Wiedenbrück for this.
