Wittgenstein Castle is located between the Lahn and Laasphebach rivers above the town of Bad Laasphe in North Rhine-Westphalia, on a mountain 470 m above sea level.
A castle on this site was first mentioned in a document in 1187 under the name "Widenkindigstein". Earlier, in 1174, Count Werner I had named himself after the castle, which must have existed at that time. There is currently no evidence of an older foundation; perhaps the castle was built around the middle of the 12th century by a member of the Count House of Reichenbach/Ziegenhain and fell a little later into the hands of Count Werner I, who used it to build an independent estate.
