As Wannsee Island, today an area surrounded by the waters of the Havel in the southwest of Berlin and in the northeast of the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam, is referred to. The island is predominantly located in the Berlin district of Wannsee in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf area, with a small part in the Potsdam locality of Klein Glienicke.
The area was shaped by the last Ice Age. From the 17th to the 19th century, it was named after the two villages located on the island, Klein-Glienicke and Stolpe, as Glienickian or Stolpean Werder.
