The Mönchmühle is one of the oldest water mills in Brandenburg. It is located in the district of Schildow-Mönchmühle in the municipality of Mühlenbecker Land. The water wheel is part of the coat of arms of the municipality.
Around the year 1230, Cistercian monks founded the Mönchmühle. First, a dam about 100 m long and 20 m wide was built. About 15,000 m3 of earth was moved to finally generate a waterfall height of 4 m and sufficient water power for constant grinding operation. This was an extraordinary achievement for the time.
