The Rüdersdorf limestone quarry is a large quarry or open pit near the small town of Rüdersdorf, east of Berlin, on the southern edge of the Barnim region. It is the largest geological outcrop in northern Germany from the Mesozoic era. Limestone has been mined there for about 800 years.
The limestone belongs to the Germanic Triassic and was formed in the middle Triassic period about 240 million years ago. The corresponding rock series is referred to as shell limestone. The stratigraphy in the quarry ranges from "wavy limestone" to "main shell limestone."
