The Fehmarn Sound is the sea arm of the Baltic Sea between the Kiel Bay and the Mecklenburg Bay, which separates the island of Fehmarn from the mainland. Until 1963, it was crossed by a railway ferry with car transport between Großenbrode Ferry and the place Fehmarnsund, until the Fehmarn Sound Bridge was built as part of the completion of the Vogelfluglinie. Places by the Fehmarn Sound include Burg auf Fehmarn, Großenbrode, Heiligenhafen, and the aforementioned former ferry terminal Fehmarnsund.
There was already a ferry connection over the Fehmarn Sound in the early 13th century, which connected the island of Fehmarn with the mainland.
