In the plane crash in Bremerhaven on December 26, 2001, a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander of Bremerhaven Airline crashed into the Weser shortly after takeoff. It was on a flight from Bremerhaven Airport to the German North Sea island of Wangerooge.
The Britten-Norman took off from runway 34 at 10:12 AM. The aircraft did take off, but barely gained altitude. Over the Weser, the plane made a left turn, lost altitude, and crashed into the river with its left wing first. Seven passengers and the pilot died, while one female passenger survived with serious injuries.
