In 1903, the Peill und Sohn glassworks was founded in Düren. Leopold Peill, the owner at the time, was a patron of the city of Düren. For example, he donated 25,000 marks for the X-ray machine of the municipal hospital, built in 1909. In 1947, the glass factories of the Putzler brothers' factory in Penzig in Upper Lusatia, founded in 1869, and Peill und Sohn in Düren merged to form Peill & Putzler Glashüttenwerke GmbH. Putzler relies on many years of experience as a supplier of glass for kerosene lanterns. Due to the Second World War, production was concentrated in Düren on a 6.9-hectare site next to the former Düren sugar factory in the north of the city.
