The Waterloo Monument in Luisenplatz, Wiesbaden, commemorates the soldiers of the Duchy of Nassau Army who fell in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Since 1806, the Duchy of Nassau had been allied with Napoleon as part of the Confederation of the Rhine. It was only after the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 that Nassau switched sides and fought in the Wars of Liberation in the alliance against France. In the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the ducal troops fought in the Anglo-Dutch army. In this battle, 887 Nassau soldiers lost their lives. The Waterloo Medal was established for the survivors.
