Barby Castle is a baroque castle complex in Barby, a town in the Salzlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, whose origins date back to a border castle of the 10th century and which has served as a residence since the 17th century. From the 18th to the 20th century, it was used as an educational institution and has housed the land register archive of Saxony-Anhalt since 1979.
The beginnings of the castle date back to the 10th century. In a document from King Otto I from the year 961, with which he gave Barby to his sister Mathilde, Abbess of Quedlinburg, a border castle in the village is mentioned for the first time. The Quedlinburg abbess enfeoffed the Barby lordship with the castle.
