The castle ruins of Klettenberg, also known as Burg Clettenberg, are the remains of a high castle located in the village of Klettenberg, a district of the municipality of Hohenstein in the Nordhausen district of Thuringia, at the southern edge of the Harz mountains.
To protect the settlements of Ellrich and Walkenried, as well as the present-day wasteland of Malmerode, a castle was built by Saxon nobility on a prominent mountain spur of Klettenberg. Before the construction of the castle stronghold, the castle hill was likely used as a cult and sacrificial site for the god Krodo, as the name Temple suggests. The castle was founded around 1087 by Volkmar de Walkenried.
