Originally, the village of Schwerin bore the name Westhofen, a common name in Westphalia for a place that lay west of a larger town. It belonged to the municipality of Rauxel and bordered in the west on the old Castrop and in the east on the farming community of Frohlinde.
In 1878, the Graf Schwerin colliery was built in Westhofen. Through the construction of colony houses for the miners, Westhofen grew into a small town with a market square, shops and restaurants. In 1936, the village was officially renamed Schwerin.
