Vlatten is nestled in a gentle valley of the Voreifel at the eastern edge of Heimbach. Next to Vlatten are Wollersheim, Hergarten, and Heimbach.
The first settlements occurred during the time of the Romans. According to the "Regesta Imperii," the Carolingian royal palace received two visits: the first in 839, when Emperor Louis the Pious welcomed the Bishop of Poitiers in "Flatera," and the second in 846, when Emperor Lothair I signed a grant to the Abbey of Prüm in "Flattana pal r." Then the documents remain silent for a long time. However, the place name "Vlatten" is probably of Celtic origin.
