Discover all benefitsThe route starts at the parking lot at the bridge over the Ahr in Kreuzberg (Ahr), just below Altenahr.
The route runs counterclockwise and begins with a mile of flat terrain for a mile. Then comes the first climb to Krälingen, in the valley of the Sahrbach. A beautiful ascent on very good road surface, with five hairpin turns and not steep. After that, you cycle for a while on a plateau before descending back into the valley of the Sahrbach.
In Kirschahr, the next climb follows, called Wald. This is about 10% for the first kilometer but flattens out for the next 2 kilometers. You then cycle again over the plateau, toward Effelsberg, mostly on side roads. At Scheuerheck, a small part of such an internal road is in less good condition (you can also follow the main road between Wald and Scheuerheck).
You also have a view of the large radio telescope at Effelsberg. Then it goes down into the Liersbach valley, please note: this road is in reasonable condition but is narrow and goes through a dark forest, one must descend cautiously. The ascent away from the Liersbach valley can be compared to a longer climb in South Limburg and leads through beautiful woodland.
You are now cycling again on a plateau, and now for a longer period, crossing a creek valley several times with a descent and an ascent (these ascents are often at least a kilometer long). Cycling from Marthel to Wershofen is 100 meters of elevation gain. Wershofen is the first real place where you can eat or drink something. From Wershofen, there is a long descent into the valley of the Ahr (a descent of almost 5 km in length and therefore not steep).
You won’t stay long in the valley of the Ahr, because from Fuchshofen, the ascent to Reifferscheid follows, perhaps one of the most beautiful ascents in the Ahreifel and also long (6 kilometers). In Reifferscheid, the descent seems to follow, but you still have to cross a rise before the actual descent (4 km long) leads back into the valley of the Ahr (down to the town of Schuld).
Now the path leads to the cycle path over the former railway line in the Ahr valley, and you even cycle through a preserved railway tunnel. At first, the road surface is asphalt but consists of only two lanes; shortly thereafter, it becomes a sufficiently wide asphalted cycle path. You cycle over Insul on this cycle path towards Liers.
When you arrive in Liers, you can follow this path or deviate from the route and continue on the cycle path heading north. In the latter case, the ascent to the Linder Höhe drops off and 270 meters of elevation are lost. Thus, the route becomes about 7 km shorter. If you continue to follow the route, you will reach the ascent to Lind: first 5 km gradually uphill, then 3 km steeper (about 6 to 8%) with a section of six consecutive hairpin turns.
The descent over the partially steep Linder Höhe (up to 10%) takes you to Brück, and then you follow the asphalted cycle path through the Ahr valley for another three kilometers back to Kreuzberg (Ahr). Watch out for the campsite in the Ahr valley, where some pedestrians may occasionally walk on the cycle path.
