The Battle of Clavijo took place on May 23, 844, between Ramiro I of Asturias and Abd al-Rahman II, emir of Cordoba. This legend was created to give more glory to the Battle of Simancas in 939 between Ramiro II of León and Abd al-Rahman III. The story is as follows: Ramiro I, the tenth prince of Asturias, after Pelayo, had lost the Battle of Albelda the day before. That night, Saint James appeared and reprimanded him for continuing the battle. The next day, riding a white horse, James fought alongside the Spaniards. A resounding victory for the Christians, hence his nickname matamoros or land-slayer. This belongs to the history of the Reconquista. Until 1808, there was an annual commemoration in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela: the Voto de Santiago.
