The castle of Calonge is located in the old town of the village of Calonge, in the Baix Empordà region. The first documented mention of Calonge is found in a diploma from Carloman in 881 where the terms Romanyà and Colonica appear as the northern boundary of the Vall d'Aro which was granted to the bishop of Girona, Teuter. In the second half of the 10th century, the monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols had a holding in Calonge, as confirmed in a diploma from the Carolingian king Lothair I of France, in the year 968. The castle is mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century and by the end of this century the castle is a direct possession of the counts-kings, feudal to Ramon de Solius who pays homage to Alfonso the Chaste in 1193 for the castle of "Calonge de Marítima."
