In 1238, once Balansiya was conquered, only two Muslim states remained on the peninsula: the Emirate of Gharnata and the Emirate of Mursiyya, which controlled Alzira and Dàniyya with the support of Tunis. The armies of the Crown of Aragon continued advancing southward, establishing positions against the Crown of Castile, which was also looking to expand its territories. A fortress was established in Sellent, and from there they prepared to attack Xàtiva.
