Nel 1238, una volta conquistata Balansiya, rimanevano soltanto due stati musulmani nella penisola: l'Emirato di Gharnata e l'Emirato di Mursiyya, che controllava Alzira e Dàniyya con il sostegno di Tunisi. Gli eserciti della Corona d'Aragona continuarono ad avanzare verso sud, fissando posizioni di fronte alla Corona di Castiglia, che cercava anch'essa di estendere i propri domini. Fu stabilita una fortezza a Sellent e da essa si prepararono ad attaccare Xàtiva.
