In 1238, na de verovering van Balansiya, bleven er nog maar twee moslimstaten op het schiereiland: het emiraat van Gharnata en het emiraat van Mursiyya, dat Alzira en Dàniyya bestuurde met de steun van Tunis. De legers van de Kroon van Aragón bleven naar het zuiden oprukken en vestigden posities tegenover de Kroon van Castilië, die ook zijn gebieden wilde uitbreiden. Er werd een fort gebouwd in Sellent en van daaruit maakten ze zich klaar om Xàtiva aan te vallen.
