En 1238, una vez conquistada Valencia, solo quedaban dos estados musulmanes en la península: el Emirato de Granada y el Emirato de Murcia, que controlaba Alcira y Denia con el apoyo de Túnez. Los ejércitos de la Corona de Aragón continuaron avanzando hacia el sur, fijando posiciones frente a la Corona de Castilla, que también buscaba extender sus dominios. Se estableció una fortaleza en Sellent y desde ella se dispusieron a atacar Xativa.
