The Romanesque-style fountain in Plaza de Santiago belonged to the courtyard of the Hospital de Santa Isabel d'Hungria. This hospital was built after the confiscation of the Mercedaren monastery and is currently a secondary school.
Plaza de Santiago is a perfect melting pot of Payo and Gypsies . Next to the 16th-century Church of Santiago el Major, the origins of the square date back to the 13th century , when Alfonso X the Wise ordered a chapel to be built outside the perimeter wall next to the Porta de Sant Jaume. then Porta de l'Olivillo. in honor of Santiago, the then Catholic patron saint of Castile.
