The former abbey is located in the namesake French town of Saint-Avit-Sénieur in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in the Dordogne department, about 35 km east of Bergerac, approximately 50 km west of Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Périgord landscape. The priory was built at a place where, during the time of the Merovingians, a hermit named Avitus Senior lived. He was a soldier in the service of the Visigoth king Alaric II before he withdrew as a hermit.
