Directly after the fall of France, the German Kriegsmarine takes up residence in Saint-Nazaire. When it becomes clear in October that the Battle of Britain has been lost in the air for the Germans, the German navy is tasked with isolating the island. Large numbers of submarines, the U-Boats, swarm out to intercept supply ships en route to Great Britain. Saint-Nazaire is one of the five ports along the French coast that is equipped with a massive bunker to house the submarines for maintenance and resupply. Construction begins in March 1941. A dam wall is first driven opposite the old eastern lock. In total, 14 spaces are created in which 20 U-boats can be housed.
