The Collegiate Church of the Virgin Mary was founded in 1131 in Licques by Robert the Bearded, returning from the First Crusade, then it became the Abbey of Our Lady of Licques of the order of Premonstratensians in 1132. Lambert of Ardres mentions Robert the Bearded in these terms: "A certain Robert from Licques, with a beard, was named Barbatus, because at that time anyone who did not have a long beard would be threatened with being called that and would be held in derision and contempt."
